Chapter 13
Leah
I canât be in here dressed like this. The store is beautiful and opulent. The carpet is deep red, and the walls are a soft shade of gray. Behind every glass counter there are endless displays of sparkling diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. I donât know much about jewelry, but I can tell looking at this stuff that I canât afford any of it.
Pulling back, I hesitate. Sasha turns to me, a frown marring his ridiculously handsome face. This is so unfair. Look at him in his tux, like a hotter version of James Bond. Whereas I am dressed in a fishnet dress, stripper shoes, a push-up bra and tiny panties.
âI canât be in here looking like this,â I protest in a hissed whisper.
âYou can be anywhere you want, dressed however you please. Or rather,â he adds with a smirk, âdressed how I please.â
âI look like Iâve stepped off a porn set; this is mortifying. Canât I wait in the car?â
âNo. I need to see if the choker fits.â He tips my chin up. âYou can dress however the fuck you want because youâre with a Volkov. And if one person says a wrong word to you, Iâll make them wish theyâd never opened their mouths.â
I swallow hard, wanting to cover the shameful outfit.
When we reach the far end of the long counter, the middle-aged man behind it gives Sasha a dip of his head. âWelcome, Mr. Volkov sir. It has been a while since we last saw you in London.â He turns his gaze to me, and I expect shock, or derision, but instead he gives me a warm smile. His gaze never leaves my face. âThis must be the charming young lady we have the necklace waiting for.â
âIndeed, she is.â Sasha smiles at me as if to say âtold you so.â
The man walks away, leaving us as he goes to the other end of the counter and rubs at the glass with a cloth.
In the counter in front of me there is nothing for sale costing less than five thousand pounds.
Iâm dressed like a stripper, in a store selling jewelry worth more than a yearâs rent on the house I was living in.
How did I end up in this position?
I surreptitiously rub my thumb at the smudged lipstick, embarrassed by it in this expensive space.
Fingers tip my chin, and Sasha takes the silk cloth placed in the top pocket of his penguin suit and wipes gently, correcting it for me. âIf it bothers you, say so, my beauty.â
Heâs so handsome in that suit, he looks like a god playing amongst us mere mortals.
The moment I first saw him in the suit, I was about to tell him how incredible he looked, but then he went all weird and freaky on me, and now I donât know whatâs going on.
âI thought you said I had to leave it this way,â I hiss at him, my head hurting with all thatâs happening.
âIâve changed my mind. If it upsets you, I donât want you to do it.
